The top 12 foods that make you happy
What if you could take a pill and instantly overcome your depression and be happy? Or what about the animated potion from Harry Potter? None of those things really exist, of course, but there are some foods that contain supplements that have been shown in clinical trials to improve your mood. You may not be able to take a magic pill that will instantly cheer you up, but you can definitely eat some of these foods to fight depression, ease anxiety, or just boost your mood when you're having a bad day.
Strawberries
Here's what you probably didn't know about the fruit that makes our cupcakes so delicious. Strawberries not only contain vitamin C, which has been shown to improve mood, but also provides you with much-needed potassium, which helps with the generation of nerve cells and helps regulate all the other minerals that you put into your Body.
Salmon
Well, not everyone likes fish. But for those who do, salmon is packed with good things for your body. For example, it has omega-3 fatty acids, as well as vitamin D, which help release serotonin, which is the "wellness" hormone. A five-year study showed that people with depression were sad or angry less often than they included fatty fish like salmon three times a week. So add a little salmon to your diet and your depression may subside.
Sunflower
Ah, the sunflower. It is such a beautiful plant, growing tall in gardens and yards across the country and starring in games like Plants vs. Zombies But those seeds that you can find anywhere contain all kinds of goodies. Two of them are selenium and magnesium. Both supplements are supposed to give you a surge of positive emotions. Additionally, the amino acids in sunflowers help increase serotonin, which we discussed earlier.
Yogurt
Some women go through severe mood swings when it is "that time of the month." But yogurt has been shown to reduce depression, sadness, crying, and irritability during PMS. This is due to the calcium in yogurt. A diet containing about 1,300 mg of yogurt made the women in the study feel better because one cup of yogurt contains more than 400 mg of calcium. Two cups of yogurt will give you the recommended daily allowance and the rest will be taken from other sources. Therefore, yogurt can be the thing to cheer you up when you're feeling down. It is also delicious.
Walnuts
Walnuts are packed with antioxidants and omega-3s, as well as a mood-stabilizing supplement called magnesium. Omega-3s improve your mood while magnesium keeps you stable. One study showed that those who are deficient in magnesium (combined with too much calcium) have signs of depression that include trouble sleeping, irritation, and extreme anxiety. So you can eat walnuts on their own or you can put them in a salad or a bunch of other foods.Cherry tomatoes contain the antioxidant lycopene. Lycopene is great for mental health because it reduces brain inflammation. Inflammation is the body's response to disease or toxin and inflammation of the brain. Some experts believe that inflammation of the brain leads to symptoms of depression. So what have you got to lose? Make a salad with some cherry tomatoes and see if you feel better afterwards.
Popcorn
That's right, your favorite movie snack is loaded with carbohydrates, which cause a major spike in serotonin levels. This makes us happy and improves our mood, helping us to relax. Unfortunately, carbohydrates can also cause weight gain if you eat too much. The good news is that there are carbs that won't stop you from putting on that bathing suit. You want low glycemic carbohydrates and lots of fiber. You can get those carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables and whole grains, including, you guessed it, popcorn.
Oregano
You already know oregano. It's that spice you put on pizza, spaghetti, and some other foods, but eating more will allow you to absorb caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid, and quercetin. All three supplements have been shown to help with depression. They are also supposed to help with anxiety and give you energy.
Bananas
Okay, monkeys. Make sure you eat your bananas. They are rich in potassium that gives you energy, as well as magnesium that we talked about before. They also contain vitamin B6, which is a supplement that you need for the successful creation of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which are often talked about. These are chemicals directly responsible for your happiness and energy.
Eggs
You've heard the commercials. The incredible edible egg. It's true: Eggs contain so many goodies that you should make eating them a priority if you suffer from symptoms of depression. Eggs contain zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and iodine. Oh, and let's not forget that eggs contain the protein you need. It really is an amazing food because all of these things help fight depression in some way and are good for helping to boost brain activity and give you an energy boost.
Turkey
The next item on our list is a turkey. Do you know when you eat turkey and feel sleepy and full? Turkey, it turns out, contains tryptophan, which is a mild sedative and produces niacin and serotonin, both of which will improve your mood.
Oysters
Not only do oysters help with anxiety due to the zinc they contain, which acts as a mood stabilizer, oysters are also aphrodisiac and create feelings of attraction and love in some people. Zinc is important for your body because if you get stressed your zinc levels drop, so eat some oysters and improve your mood. So, you might even want to find your match and play.
